Planting At The ExCel

Today we have been to the ExCel arena in Custom House to watch The Paralympic Games.  Remembering this area of London as it was twenty something years ago made it a bit of a mind blowing experience.

Even more so for Derek because he grew up here and his father George worked for The Port Of London Authority as an electrician on the systems that provided power to the dockyard cranes that line what is now the marina.

It was the last of the docks to close in 1983 and there is now a statue erected in tribute to all those who worked here by The Royal Docks Trust.

It may not seem beautiful in the conventional sense but on a gorgeously sunny September day, to me it is the city at it’s very, very best.
